What is it like to join a group that will begin to construct a ship from the ground up? I was told that the new cruise ship was "coming"; while I was arranging my next contract; “we want you to do the start-up”, they said, now, those words were huge for me. I have done start-ups before but as a junior doctor, not the Department Head. This would mean new initiatives such as new facilities, new electronic health record systems, and new patient advocates, protocols; and all that. The thought of coming together to create something fresh thrilled us. We were aware from the start that the personnel would be essential to the new ship's success. The Corporate teams, however, were very supportive even before the project got underway. We were confident that the technical director would supply the technical know-how we would need to properly construct the cruise ship based on early discussions with the project manager. The ship leaders, the SLT, and younger team members with the courage and adaptability to make crucial decisions comprised the remainder of the group. We knew right away that the crew would be crucial to the success of the new ship. The team commitment helped the project succeed beyond what we would have imagined. Everyone worked tirelessly, and had a truly amazing experience working together.
We learned a great deal about ourselves and the team members we worked with. It was also a fun ride working on a project that has a big impact on the lives of many people and the ship overall.
The ability to understand that we were all in this project and to be able to offer our support and help was the most important part of the experience for me. I learned a lot about teamwork and leadership from working on this project. I learned how to make important decisions and how to communicate with others. Such a wonderful experience, I must say. I am eager to participate in another project in the future.
I would like to appreciate all the Medical Staff and everyone for their contribution. I am thankful I am given the opportunity and the honor to manage the Medical Department. I can only hope that I have passed on my legacy to the next generation of ship doctors who will continue to serve this vessel. I have always believed that being a ship doctor is not just a job but a calling. It requires compassion, dedication and an unrelenting commitment to the well-being of others.
